up 072: exitos y mas exitos [2001]

''originally released as a vinyl ep in 1997, of mexican descent's 'exitos y mas exitos' (hits and more hits) is a fascinating slice of underground hip-hop history.

the flow of the raps feels deliberately awkward, as if the bandmembers are trying to squeeze as much information into each song as possible, rhythm be damned. however, the heavily latino-accented delivery only accentuates the sociopolitical themes of the lyrics about mexican-american and native american life in the united states. musically, 'exitos y mas exitos' is even more interesting: ignoring the usual pool of old funk and r&b samples, these songs are built on a wide variety of samples including heavy metal guitars, psychedelic organ (on the outstanding ''night and day,'' the album's best track) and drum samples that recall santana's latin rock rhythms.

this expanded version more than doubles the length of the original vinyl ep with songs recorded during the same period, all of them as good or better than the original tracks. 'exitos y mas exitos' is a fairly minor record, but it's a fascinating hidden gem for hip-hop historians.'' - stewart mason
